This compulsory module examines the meaninings of health, the perceptions indivdualshave about health and the range of factors and behaviours thatinfluence health. Students are introduced to health promotion and investigateapproaches and strategies that can assist individualsto achieve better health.

WHAT INFLUENCES THE HEALTH OF INDIVIDUALS?
  • Determinants of health - Individual factors (knowledge, skill, attituedes, genetics) Sociocultural factors (family,peers, media, religion, culture)Socioeconomic factors (employment, education, income) Environmental factors (geographical location, access to health services and technology)
  • Degree of control individuals can exert over their health (modifable and non-modifable determinants, changing influences of determinants)
  • Health as a social construct (interrelationship of determinants, challenges, individual responsibility)

WHAT STRATEGIES HELP TO PROMOTE THE HEALTH OF INDIVIDUALS?
  • Health promotion (what is it?)
  • Responisibility for health promotion (individuals, community groups, schools, noon-government organisations, government, international)
  • Approaches and strategies for health promotion - Lifestyle/behavioural approaches (e.g. quit smoking programs) Preventative medical approaches (e.g. childhood immunisation, cancer screening) Public health approaches (e.g. health promoting schools/workplaces)
